Small company vs Large Company – that is the question.

When it comes to charting your next career move, one of the main decisions you’ll face is whether to work at a small, midsize, or large company. Each type of company has its own unique advantages and disadvantages, and your decision should depend on your personal preferences, career goals, and current circumstances.

Small companies typically have fewer than 50 employees, while midsize companies have between 50 and 500 employees, and large companies have more than 500 employees. Small companies often offer a tight-knit work environment, personalized attention from management, and more opportunities to take on a variety of roles. On the other hand, large companies often have more resources, well-established processes, and a higher level of job security.

Midsize companies may offer the best of both worlds, with a balance of personalized attention and more resources than a small company. However, they may not offer as many opportunities for career advancement as a larger company.

According to numbers published in 2021 by the US Census Bureau, of the 13,988,342 companies in the US, 12,620,729 have less than 500 employees. So unless you have specific large company skills or are targeting large companies, there is a 90% chance you will land at a small to mid size company.

To help you make your decision, consider your career goals, desired work environment, and personal preferences. If you prefer a close-knit team and the ability to wear multiple hats, a small company might be the right fit. If you value stability and a well-established company culture, a large company might be a better choice. And if you want a balance of personalized attention and resources, a midsize company could be the way to go.

Ultimately, the most important factor in your decision should be your own preferences and goals. Consider the size of the company as just one factor among many when evaluating your next career move.
