Couple times per year I like to look at the makeup of the current workforce. Who is in the workforce now and who is coming down the pike. Today’s workplace is truly a generational mashup— so here’s the lineup card for most companies:
Boomers: Born 1946-1964, now 61-79 y/o
Gen X: 1965-1980, 45-60 y/o
Millennials: 1981-1996, 29-44 y/o
Gen Z: 1997-2012, 13-28 y/o
Gen Alpha: 2013-2025, teens to tots—high school/college now, hitting work around 2030-2035
Boomers hold 15% of the workforce, but over 11,200 retire daily as estimated in 2024’s “Peak 65” wave (Alliance for Lifetime Income, 2024). Half won’t quit or retire outright—79% prefer semi-retirement, says Syndio in 2022. Low retirement savings are a big reason, with 52% unsure they’ve got enough retirement savings (Alliance 2024). Many continue to lean on work as savings stagnate & healthcare costs rise. Gallup’s 2024 statistics show 29% of Boomers working past 70.
Gen X, at 31% (DOL, Q2 2024), keep the lights on—only 14% eyed the Great Resignation exit (Syndio, 2022). What’s keeping Gen X’ers at work? Again – retirement concerns. Their savings assets hit $1,035,600 in 2022 (SCF), likely $1.1M in 2024 (Flow of Funds, 2023), yet 41% fear outliving their savings (MMA, 2024). Caught between aging parents and kids, they’re currently the workforce anchors—steady, stretched, indispensable.
Millennials rule currently comprising 36% of the workforce. Per TeamStage—20% hop jobs yearly for promotion, more pay or just change of scenery (TeamStage, 2024). 60% say they’d choose a job aligning with personal values like social impact over a higher salary (Deloitte Digital, 2023).
Gen Z’s 18% passed Boomers last year (DOL). Their workplace characteristic? 72% ditch stiff gigs for flex or contract jobs (Qureos, 2025). 80% of Gen Z’ers expect cutting edge tools driving their ability to be productive, efficient and innovate (Workable, 2024).
Gen Alpha’s cake is currently being prepped and baking—digital natives coming of (workforce) age within the next decade. 44% already use school-provided devices, shaping a future where AI and digital tools are non-negotiable for work (Exploding Topics, 2025). 65% of their future roles may not exist yet – think AI (GetHppy, 2023).
So here we are—Boomers hanging on, Gen X holding steady, Millennials hopping, Gen Z flexing, and Gen Alpha prepping to shake it up. Let’s find your next star, whatever the generation.
