After Peloton announced layoffs of 20% of its corporate workforce, a wise move would have been to make sure those folks didn’t have access to virtual meetings anymore. Sadly, as you’ve probably read in the news, this task was overlooked.
When brand-new CEO Barry McCarthy and former CEO John Foley got on the screen for a virtual all-hands in February, many PO’ed current and former employees took the opportunity to air their grievances in front of the entire team. And it wasn’t just about disgruntled employees angry to be losing their jobs. There were accusations of mismanagement bandied about in the chat function.
There’s an obvious lesson in here for leaders and HR organizations. As a recruiter for 25+ years, I’ve seen firsthand how important it is to handle any degree of layoffs with skill and thoughtfulness.
Peloton will recover from this snafu — hopefully with a valuable lesson learned.
