Most people can agree that the traditional “command and control” idea of leadership is outdated. The best leaders today are cooperative, communicative, and transparent. Leaders are now expected to be more agile, more innovative, more collaborative.

That’s why I was surprised to read in Harvard Business Review that in reality, the top-down approach to leadership actually worked really well for some leaders during the pandemic. During this time, quick tactical decision-making was valuable.

For this reason, HBR describes “leadership tensions” today’s leaders constantly have to navigate. For instance, finding the right balance between being a “power holder” and a “power sharer.”

The truth is that there’s no one playbook for leadership in 2022. Most of the leaders I work with are confronted with that tension every day. Leaders are trying to be both confident and humble, intuitive and analytical, tactical and visionary.
