The Wrong Way to Quit a Job

“Take this job and shove it.” ~ Johnny Paycheck

When you’re fed up with your job and you know you’re moving on, what’s the best move?

For Steven Slater, a flight attendant with JetBlue, the answer was: Quit over the intercom, in front of a plane full of passengers waiting to debark, and then dramatically slide down the emergency escape chute at JFK Airport.

Was this the most professional way to go? Probably not. Did it make a statement? Definitely! Would I recommend such a dramatic flair for exiting a job you don’t want? No way. Slater ended up facing legal charges for his dramatic exit.

If you’re suddenly thinking of leaving your job, don’t be dramatic about it. Try to distill out the emotion and remain professional. Instead, give me a call and we can work through a sensible resignation process together and discuss finding you a job that’s a better fit.
