The Paradigm of Remote Meetings

Still doing Zoom/Teams meetings?

At the beginning of the pandemic, when many people began to adopt Zoom and other digital conferencing alternatives to in-person meetings, everyone was pretty forgiving. If your half-naked kid or meandering spouse wandered into the frame, your co-workers might just laugh it off.

As teleconferencing becomes the permanent norm for a lot of people — or, at least, an omnipresent option — our opinions about Zoom etiquette have become more refined and discerning.

A recent poll by HP of around 10K professionals revealed that 3 out of 4 people now think someone (or something) wandering into their background is “disruptive,” and younger workers are much more anxious about performing well with technology. 1 in 5 feel judged when they flub something technological.

In my job as a recruiter, I frequently have remote meetings with both hiring managers and job seekers. From my perspective, people are getting better and better at Zooming in professional ways. Even as our expectations rise, so do our skills.
