When you think of boomerang employees, you probably think about re-hiring previous employees back into their same jobs. But there’s another path boomerang employees often take: coming back to their old company in a new role.
The ideal career arc, for a lot of people, might be to join a great company and climb the ladder from an entry-level position to a senior leadership role. But, in fact, the career path is often not this linear.
Take the employee who amicably leaves a position at one company to take on a role at another — then, later on, finds that an even better role has opened up at the original company. Is it weird to go back?
Not really! In fact, this sort of boomerang employee has the advantage of both familiarity with the original company and broader experience out in the world. Both things can make that person a positive candidate for the role.
But beware of the employee who may have left feeling stifled or disgruntled in their role in the first place. Was that person a cultural fit the first time? When you consider re-hiring a prior employee, do your due diligence to ensure it’s an amicable fit.
