Job Seeker  = Think Like a Marketer

If you’re hoping to land a new job this year, it’s time to think like a marketer.

When people approach me to tell me they’re ready to launch a job search, one of the first things I say is, “How’s your online presence?” If your LinkedIn profile isn’t complete, that’s a definite ding. But marketing yourself for a new role goes beyond LinkedIn.

It also has to include your comfort level in selling yourself verbally as well as the messaging you use to describe your career and what you’re looking for.

And, much like a real brand, being consistent across platforms is also important. If you show up as uber-professional on LinkedIn but you’re a crass wisecracker on Twitter or post inappropriate content on Instagram, it sends mixed messages. If you think hiring professionals don’t look at social media accounts – think again. (Gentle reminder)

And yes, your Facebook profile is allegedly private — but you can never be too careful, or too consistent.
