📃 Resume writing time. I get questions every day regarding resume writing relative to formats, length, content, dates, etc. Honesty is always the best policy when it comes to resumes. Also remember, your resume will be the first example to a potential employer of your writing and communication skills.
While there are numerous topics we could explore regarding resumes, let’s focus on the “resume tricks” that you should avoid. Some schools of thought encourage professionals to get (IMO) way too cute when it comes to the resume. Here are some things to keep in mind when creating or updating your resume:
❗ Do not Fabricate Information: Lying about skills, experience, or education can lead to immediate disqualification or later dismissal if discovered.
❗ Avoid Keyword Stuffing and Jargon: While keywords are crucial for ATS systems, overusing them or filling resumes with irrelevant jargon can make the document unreadable or appear suspicious.
❗ Be Mindful of Resume Format Choices: Functional resumes might hide employment gaps but often raise doubts about career progression. Creative or overly complex designs might showcase creativity but can detract from the content or hint at unprofessionalism.
❗ Avoid Exaggerations: Inflating job titles or responsibilities might seem like a good way to stand out, but it risks backfiring in interviews or background checks.
❗ Be Careful Adding Visual and Layout Elements: Adding photos unless job-specific, or using unconventional fonts and colors, can introduce bias or reduce ATS compatibility.
❗ Use Objective Statements or Professional Summaries Targeted to the Specific Job: Enough said on that. Nothing looks worse than submitting a resume with either of these and it doesn’t match the job for which you’re applying.
❗ Avoid Layout Overload: Too many bullet points can make a resume look like a list of tasks rather than highlighting achievements.
Keep your resume design and content authentic, clear and professional. A touch of creativity may be beneficial but should not compromise the truthfulness or professional presentation of your qualifications or experience.
