Who writes job descriptions/ad posts these days? What can you glean from the verbiage in the post? In some circumstances, reading between the lines can throw off important clues about not only the job, but company culture. Nowadays, understanding the culture of a potential workplace is as crucial as the job description itself. A recent article from The Muse highlights how to identify potential red flags in job postings that might hint at a toxic work environment.
🔍 Look for Overly Vague Descriptions: If a job post lacks clarity on roles or expectations, it might be masking a chaotic or undefined work structure.
💪 Watch for ‘Heroic’ Language: Descriptions that glorify working under extreme stress or at a “feverish pace” can indicate an unhealthy work-life balance. One of my favorites is “we have a work hard, play hard mentality”.
🤝 The ‘Family’ Trope: While a sense of community is great, over-emphasizing being a ‘family’ might suggest blurred boundaries and expectations of excessive loyalty or time commitment.
🚫 Avoid the ‘Wear Many Hats’ Trap: Without clear duties, this phrase could mean you’re expected to handle an unmanageable workload.
By reading between the lines of job descriptions, you can find preliminary indications, discovering if a company’s culture aligns with your values and well-being. Bear in mind that anyone could have written that job description by any means – AI, copying an ad online, legacy JDs in the file, etc. Either way, if you see clues, follow up with questions.
Remember, your job should enhance your life, not detract from it.
