Let’s get off the dime and start talking to companies about potential career opportunities.
Where to start? How about that resume.
There are quite a few theories on resume writing, but let’s look into an oft-asked topic. How far back should you go on your resume? 🤔
As a recruiter and career coach, I’m often asked about how far back job seekers should go on their resume. The answer depends on a few factors, including your age, experience, and the job you’re applying for.
In general, it’s a good idea to go back 10-15 years on your resume. This will give employers a good overview of your work experience and accomplishments 💼. However, if you’re a recent graduate or have less than 5 years of experience, you may want to go back even further, to include your internships and other relevant experiences 💡.
On the other hand, if you’re a more experienced job seeker with over 15 years of experience, you may want to consider only including your most recent jobs on your resume. This will help to keep your resume concise and focused on your most relevant experience 🎯.
Here are a few examples of how far back job seekers should go on their resume, based on their age and experience:
💡Recent graduate: Include all relevant work experience, including internships, volunteer work, and student jobs 🎓.
💡Job seeker with 5-10 years of experience: Include your most recent 5-10 jobs, as well as any relevant internships or volunteer work 💼.
💡Job seeker with over 15 years of experience: Include your most recent 3-5 jobs, as well as any relevant experience that is directly related to the job you’re applying for 🎓.
Here are a few statistics about how far back job seekers should go on their resume:
✏️According to Resume Genius, 60% of recruiters recommend going back 10-15 years on a resume. 💯
✏️Zety found that 70% of hiring managers say that job seekers should only include relevant experience on their resume. 👍
✏️Resume Lab found that 50% of job seekers say they include experience from over 15 years ago on their resume. 😱
Ultimately, the best way to decide how far back to go on your resume is to tailor it to the specific job you’re applying for. Take a look at the job description and see what kind of experience the employer is looking for. Balance your resume proportionally towards the experience the company is seeking.
It’s also important to keep your resume concise. A page and a half resume is suitable for the lion’s share of job seekers. If you have a lot of experience, you may need to go to two pages, but try to avoid going any longer than that.
