“Tim, so, how much would you like to make?” OR “so what sort of comp package are you looking for?”
The oft-dreaded job interview salary question.
It’s not a trick question, although it often feels like one. If you’re new to interviewing or rusty on the particulars, here’s how I recommend preparing for your answer.
First, do your research. Check sites like Glassdoor, Indeed, and LinkedIn for current salary data in your role and geographical area.
Next, if possible, reach out to someone you know in a similar role, or even at that organization, and ask them if they’re willing to have a frank discussion with you about salary expectations.
Also, know what kind of value you bring to an organization. In other words, what you can add to their top line and/or what you are able to do to increase their bottom line or EBITDA.
And finally, go into the interview with both a realistic, down-to-earth expectation and the willingness to advocate for yourself. Ask yourself how badly do you want this position? Do I really need every last possible dollar in order to take this job?
Always bear in mind that you can deflect this question back to the interviewer to a certain extent. And if you need more coaching on how to answer the salary question, that’s a great way to take advantage of your relationship with a #recruiter. Give me a shout and we can talk it through.
