So how to stay visible when your face is on a screen in a room full of actual bodies?
Harvard Business Review suggests remote workers “overindex on creating perceptions of rock solid reliability.” In other words, overdeliver on the amount of work you do.
But expecting remote workers to bend over backwards to prove they’re being productive is what got us to this current stage of heightened burnout. Instead, I prefer another of the words of wisdom offered by HBR: Make yourself physically visible.
This might mean showing up in the office occasionally to meet with new hires and say hello to colleagues in person. And in video meetings, make sure your face is visible, well-lit and that you’re participating in calls.
Leaders I work with are frequently navigating this new paradigm of hybrid work these days. In my opinion, it’s also important to be “visible” in communication, emailing, Slacking and otherwise participating in conversational threads.
