Networking. Not necessarily a topic most CPA’s get all that excited about. After all, while there are exceptions, we’re not exactly your typical social butterflies 🦋. Just because it’s not in your DNA, it doesn’t diminish the importance of building connections and expanding professional circles.
So, why should networking be important for CPAs? 🤔 Well, here’s one reason, : many experts suggest that up to 80% of job seekers found their positions via networking! 😲 How so? By tapping into that “hidden job market”. Numerous studies suggest that 70-80% of jobs are not even published before they are filled.
Now, let’s talk about how to network effectively as a CPA. 📝 Here are some tried-and-true tips from the pros:
1️⃣ Get involved in local business networks or online professional groups. 🌐 This is a great way to meet like-minded individuals and expand your professional network. Plus, you’ll stay up to date on industry trends and best practices.
2️⃣ Branch out and talk to people you don’t know. 🙋♀️ It’s natural to stick to your usual bubble, but you never know what opportunities may arise from a chance encounter. So, be brave and attend new groups and strike up a conversation with a new face at your next networking event.
3️⃣ Set up the right referral contacts. 📞 Connect with fellow tax professionals, financial advisors, business or estate attorneys, and loan officers. These connections can be a goldmine for referrals and potential collaborations. Create with those professionals who are not competitors but are still in your practice ecosystem.
4️⃣ Join a mastermind group or attend meetups. 🤝 The majority of improvement in many firms has happened since expanding their professional networks. These gatherings are where the magic happens, so don’t be shy – get out there and mingle!
5️⃣Even though I am a recruiter – I have helped MANY CPAs and will continue to help CPAs & financial professionals secure jobs that were never posted or published. Jobs that fall into that 70-80% category (above). Not sure that exactly falls into networking, but as you expand your network, make sure you’re shaking hands with an experienced recruiter who has an established and trusted network.
Remember, networking isn’t just about landing a job or finding clients; it’s also about building a community of peers. 🌟 Most careers get to a point where it’s just as important WHO you know as it is WHAT you know. With the right connections, there’s no telling where your journey will take you. 🚀
