What are employers looking for in candidates in 2023?

LinkedIn’s “insider look” at the most sought-after skills is out, and the top skill this year is one that ChatGPT will probably never be very good at: managing people.

Frankly I view management as a subset of leadership. Many “managers” fail as a result of not knowing how or failing to lead. Hovering over people and trying to manage workflow does not constitute effective leadership.

When you look at the list of these top 10 what strikes me is four of them are leadership, management, communication and teamwork. All characteristics of high performers who can work productively as a member or leader of a team.

If you’re looking to increase your value in an always changing professional market, brushing up on your ability to work collaboratively as a member of a team is a good use of your time.

As a recruiter, I hold leadership skills in high regard. It’s not the easiest skill to be good at, but premier leaders & managers ultimately create talent retention. Hence the saying “people don’t leave jobs, they leave managers”.
