What is an effective work-life balance?
We’re used to hearing about “work-life balance,” but more and more lately, I’ve been hearing the reworded phrase “making work fit into life.”
It’s a subtle distinction that indicates people are fed up with feeling like their lives revolve around work, and that the struggle is simply to squeeze some real life into their schedule. In this post-pandemic era, far fewer people are willing to spend all their time at work.
Some recent studies show that 66% of all full time employees in the US do not believe they have a healthy work-life balance. To that end, 92% of employees are regularly working evening & weekends. A big reason for this is 72% leave their communication apps open all day & night. Further, only an astonishing 5% of employees finish their daily tasks every day.
Work-life balance is not the world’s newest concept, though. It’s simply a reworking of a goal society has paid lip service to for a long time.
For the hiring managers I work with, having cultures that truly support employees’ lives can make a big difference in hiring.
There are still plenty of people who are solely career focused and willing to sacrifice their personal time for their careers, but that archetype is less common than it used to be. A healthy approach to work now includes knowing when to unplug and/or take time off.
