Maintaining Lifelong Intelligence, Focus and Mental Agility

Who decides how smart you are? YOU, right? It’s about your decision-making skills, and the ability to learn and use what you’ve learned.

…to a point.

After 40, our brains radically rewire. According to neuroscientists, previously partitioned networks used for different processes become steadily more integrated. As we get older, the number of separate areas declines.

Is that good… or bad? A bit of both.

That same generalization actually allows vocabulary and general knowledge to INCREASE.

BUT it also negatively impacts executive function and attention span. Working memory, fluid intelligence, and thinking abstractly all decline.

Basically, older adults have less flexible thinking.

It’s not all up to genetics, however. Healthy diet, regular exercise, and a healthy lifestyle that includes good sleep, and less alcohol & drug use can still give you control over your thought process.
