The term “born leader” is a bit of a misnomer. The reality is that leaders are not born; they’re nurtured, developed, often self-taught and almost always creative. They’re held aloft by mentorship, and they learn as they grow.
Perhaps you’re not in a situation where you have a mentor. Or while you like your company and your teammates, your supervisor is not someone you aspire to learn from.
If that’s the case, you can do some DIY leadership development. A recent publication by Colin Baker on the website Leaders suggests developing leadership abilities by focusing on these actions & characteristics:
- Accepting Responsibility
- Constant Learning
- Motivating to Action (largely attitude related)
- Adapting to Changes
- Showing Empathy (emotional intelligence)
If leadership is your aspiration, but your reality is a lack of upward momentum, perhaps it’s time to move on from your current situation and find one that will nurture your inner leader.
