Is RTO Working? What is RTO?

Yet another gift the pandemic has given us: a new acronym to incorporate into our lexicon.

Move over WFH, welcome in RTO. RTO stands for “return to office,” as the zinger I just read: “There’s a growing sense that RTO isn’t working.”

For a lot of the companies I interface with, RTO does, in fact, seem to be working, and quite well. But for others, it’s been a rocky road, with a bit of ambivalence.

While workers missed the energy of collaboration and camaraderie in the office, they didn’t necessarily miss the commute. And if some people are in the office while others are at home, there are still annoying Zoom calls to contend with.

But according to JLL’s latest Workforce Preferences Barometer, 70% of the workforce is now back in the office at least one day per week. The RTO is happening, and it will be interesting to see how productivity and employee happiness evolve.
