Many of you have reached out, curious about the current job market, particularly the interview landscape. Based on my contacts and hearing from companies & candidates, 2024 has started off choppy. Is the “it’s a candidate’s market” era drawing to a close? Too soon to tell I think. 🤔
That said, let’s keep in mind what to expect in a job interview process. I understand that for some, the process can be daunting or overwhelming, so understanding key statistics can help you to approach interviews with confidence.
Here’s a snapshot of the 2024 job interview landscape:
💡 Competition: It’s a jungle out there and very competitive! With an average of 118 applicants per job, landing an interview is an accomplishment itself. In fact, only 20% of applicants even make it to the interview stage.
💡 Success Rates: Once you reach the interview stage, your chances of securing the position increase significantly. Roughly 30.89% of interviewed candidates receive job offers.
💡 Interview Length: Be prepared to invest some time. Interviews (phone) can be as short as 15 minutes and in person/Zoom interviews typically last around 45 minutes, though this can vary depending on the role and company.
đź’ˇ Process Duration:Â According to a recent study by Indeed, the average interview process lasts between 1-3 interviews. The entire interview process can take longer depending upon the level but on balance 1-3 meetings is the average.
Keep these numbers in mind as you work through this competitive market. FWIW, I’m also seeing a lot of foot dragging by hiring companies as they grind through their interview processes. Not sure what’s at the root of this, but if it’s happening to you, you’re not alone.
All in all, these statistics paint a picture of a competitive yet achievable market. Remember, preparation is key. Research the company, prepare for common interview questions for your desired role, and practice your responses beforehand. By doing your homework on the company and yourself, you will be ready when that great opportunity arises.
