The old paradigm of #mentorship brought to mind an apprentice trailing a seasoned professional around a physical office. But in these hyper-digital days, that model no longer stands.
Mentorship is still incredibly powerful as a career boost, but if you’re working remotely, the arrangement has changed.
Today, #GenZ professionals entering the workforce approach mentorship in a new way. They reach out to potential mentors publicly on Twitter and LinkedIn, taking a risk that they’ll be ignored — but being bold in their approach.
And once they find a mentor, the arrangement is often virtual, organized by digital means such as cloud-based document sharing, Slack, video chat, and email.
The job seekers I meet in my role as a recruiter who are just entering the workforce are so comfortable communicating and collaborating over digital channels that this feels second nature to them. For older folks who’ve been in the work world longer, it can take a shift of vision. 👀
But it’s worth it.
