“Tim, what can I do to up my odds of getting a great job?”
Ah, the eternal question. You’ve probably already heard loads about the importance of using the right keywords in your resume in order to get past resume-scanning applications. You’ve possibly even heard this from me. And it’s true, keywords are important. But keywords won’t magically land you the job.
What will? A few key things:
✔️ First and foremost, being qualified for the job in question; there’s just no way around this one. Apply to jobs you have the experience to get.
✔️ Use all your networking skills and deploy every opportunity in your power — even if you’re working with a recruiter.
✔️ This is a big one. Ready? Make sure you want the job!
Hiring managers and recruiters have a sixth sense for how much a candidate really wants a job and obviously want to find people who are really engaged and enthusiastic. If you’re applying and interviewing out of desperation or mild curiosity, you’re probably not giving off the right vibe.
Apply for jobs you are qualified for, do everything to get the word out you want a particular job, and then — key — make sure you really want it.
