Every hiring manager seeks the same thing: that archetypal “high-potential employee” who is destined to be a huge star.

These are the people who’ve had all the schooling, mentors, and resources they need to be practically guaranteed success. They have the right personality and character traits. They typically test well. They hit all the markers for success.

But quietly standing behind that high-potential employee might be another employee who checks a few of the boxes, but not all of them. Ignored by leadership, they might seem like too big of a risk to promote.

Yet, with the right coaching and resources, this person might in fact be your next big star.

In a time when finding the perfect talent is a competitive endeavor (and one in which I am engaged in daily, by the way!), don’t forget to look for potential within your ranks. You just be surprised what “diamonds in the rough” are there already.
