Getting Social Media Feeds Ready for Your Job Hunt

Ready to look for a new job? First things first: time to clean up those social media feeds.

Yes, all of them.

I know, it can be a big job, but the process is pretty straightforward!

Here’s what you do:

⭐️  Go back and delete or edit any posts with spelling or grammatical errors. Your friends are forgiving. Hiring managers are not.

⭐️  Get rid of anything with a “red flaggy” opinion, especially of a political nature. You are passionate, and that’s good. But during your job search, try to keep these thoughts to yourself.

⭐️  Obviously, get rid of any references to drugs, alcohol, or illegal activity (at least I hope this is obvious).

⭐️  If you feel nervous about a social media profile in general, make it private — but still clean it up, just in case.

⭐️  And when it comes to your profile pictures, they don’t have to be professional headshots necessarily, but make sure they’re tasteful. Swimsuit photos on your LinkedIn profile – eh – not a good idea.

As a recruiter for 25+ years, I’ve seen more than one very embarrassed job seeker have to backtrack on a social media post. Don’t let that be you!
