Get Outside – and Become More Creative

Think you don’t have time in your busy workday to get outside and get some fresh air? Think again. You don’t have time NOT to.

According to just one study by the journal Public Library of Science (PLOS) One, spending four days immersed in nature without tech increases one’s creativity and problem-solving capabilities by 50%. Wow.

The study goes on to say that the current research establishes that there are cognitive costs associated with constant exposure to a technology-rich, suburban or urban environment, as contrasted with exposure to the natural environment that we experience when we are immersed in nature. When the research participants spent four days in a natural setting, absent all the tools of technology, the surrounding natural setting allowed them to bring a wide range of cognitive resources to bear when asked to engage in a task that requires creativity and complex convergent problem solving.

This is interesting to think about at a time when workplace wellness is such an important topic of discussion. Both here on LinkedIn and in my conversations as a recruiter, workplace wellness comes up time and again.

People are worried about people. But how can we all get healthier and feel better?

Simple. Put down the phone/device and get outside more.
