Foot in the Door Technique

There’s a psychological concept called “foot-in-the-door technique” that says if you want to get someone to do something big, first ask them to do something small.

For instance, if you want to shift an employee’s job description fairly dramatically, first take a toe-dip by asking them to take on a new type of project as just one aspect of their day to day.

Likewise, if you’re thinking about getting a new job, but feel overwhelmed by the idea of such a drastic change — not to mention the effort it will take to get there — start small and easy. Remember the old saw – the journey of a thousand miles begins with the first step.

For instance, dust off that resume and/or update your LinkedIn profile. Reach out to someone you know who works in a company you might like to work for. Or contact a recruiter to start establishing a relationship.
