How often to people change jobs?

Well – how long have you been at your current job?

If more than 4.2 years, you’re statistically due for a change, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (2022 numbers). And if you’re under 35, you’re overdue. Millennials are three times more likely to have changed jobs in the last year than other generations, and while it’s too soon to have data on Gen-Zers, since they have only been in the workforce for a handful of years, I think we all know what to expect.

Can we say the “A” word? Sure – let’s do it. Median worker tenure broken down by age are as follows:

=> 65 y/o – 9.9 years

55 to 64 – 9.8 years

45 to 54 – 6.9 years

35 to 44 – 4.7 years

25 to 34 – 2.8 years

Additional info shows median tenure for men at 4.3 years, while women’s median tenure was a bit shorter at 3.8 years.

Generational or gender data doesn’t frankly mean much to me as a recruiter . My goal is to help motivated career professionals of any age move into a new position that feels right — and where they can see themselves for a long while.
