Employee Development at the Heart of Retention

How well do you prepare & develop your employees to progress in their careers?

A recent survey by management consulting firm McKinsey found that about 40% of people who are currently employed are dissatisfied in their current job and are considering a switch in roles in the coming months.

The biggest reason? It’s not money. Nor is it flexibility to work from home. 41% say it’s a lack of prospects for career path and upward mobility where they currently work.

If you’re worried about losing talent or need to hire new talent, take note: today’s typical employee — particularly the Gen Z folks — care about more than just salary and benefits. They truly want to feel supported in their career mobility and ambitions.

In particular, leadership development is a critical area where people demand support. This includes programs like mentorship and ongoing education.

As a recruiter for 25+ years, I’ve seen a lot of great companies lose valuable talent to organizations with better career & learning opportunities.

There’s no one-size-fits-all approach to professional development. Every company has to create its own strategy based on factors such as company stage of development, overall employee appetite and industry standards.
