You’re heading into the final stages of interviewing for a new role and you know salary discussions are coming next.
Negotiating a job offer can be intimidating, but it’s an essential step in securing your next great career step. With the job market expected to be more competitive than ever in 2023, mastering the art of salary negotiation is crucial. Here, we’ve gathered top big picture/high level tips from two recent articles to help you negotiate your job offer salary effectively.
According to Succeed Smart, one of the most critical factors in salary negotiation is timing. The best time to negotiate salary is after you have received a job offer and before you accept it. It’s also crucial to have a clear understanding of your market value and to research the industry standard for similar roles. Moreover, it’s essential to approach the negotiation with a positive attitude (remember – this is business, not personal), be open to compromise, and avoid making ultimatums.
In another recent article, Indeed, suggests that candidates should practice their negotiation skills before starting the actual negotiation process. This includes researching the company’s salary and benefits packages and knowing their worth in the market. Additionally, it’s important to be specific in your requests and not just ask for a higher salary without providing business reasons for why.
Bear in mind that the number you may be shooting for could be out of the pay band for that level of employee at that particular company. For this reason I counsel my candidates to tread carefully when shooting for the upper reaches.
However, as much as you might want to maximize your earnings, it’s important to remember that the salary negotiation is just one aspect of the job offer. Before trying to negotiate every last nickel out of the offer, candidates should consider the totality of the situation, including the company, the job itself, the culture, long-term opportunities, and the industry. It’s crucial to get a fair offer, but at some point, reasonableness needs to preside as you’re deciding whether you want to join this time.
Effective job offer salary negotiations in 2023 require timing, research, a positive attitude, and open-mindedness. While it’s important to get a fair offer, candidates should also consider the bigger picture before finalizing the negotiations.
