“Tim, do you have a template I can use for cover letters?”

I can’t tell you how often I have heard this question, and the answer is, not really — because I firmly believe cover letters should be original and authentic.

Yes, there are common things. All cover letters should explicitly name the role you’re hoping to get, why you’re the right choice, and what experience backs that up — in just a handful of words.

But it’s also important to use the cover letter to grab the attention of a recruiter or hiring manager. To this end, the biggest thing you can do is steer clear of generic openers like “Dear So-and-So, I am so excited about the such-and-such position I saw you advertise.”

Instead of easing into the letter with a bland opener, jump right in. Time is short, and so are attention spans of recruiters, frankly.

The Muse has some good ones you can use for inspiration. But make ‘em your own!
