Birth Order Affecting Career Progression

Here’s a new one. But I guess it’s a thing. Can your birth order really affect your career?

Turns out there is some evidence to suggest that birth order can play a role in our career choices and trajectories. Either way I think we can have a little fun with this idea.

Studies done in the US and Europe show the following potential tendencies based on birth order:

Firstborns are often seen as leaders and natural achievers 🏆. They may have more opportunities to take on leadership roles and responsibilities, and they may be more likely to be promoted 📈. However, firstborns can also be more competitive and driven 🔥, which can lead to stress and burnout 🤯.

Middleborns often have to learn to compromise and get along with others 🤝. They may be more adaptable and flexible 🤸‍♀️, which can be helpful in a variety of career fields. Middleborns may also be more creative and less risk-averse than firstborns 💡.

Youngest children often have the benefit of learning from their older siblings’ mistakes 👫. They may be more relaxed and laid-back 😎, and they may be more willing to take risks 🚀. Youngest children may also be more creative and innovative 💡.

Only (single) children often have a strong sense of independence and self-reliance 💪. They may be more focused and driven than their peers, and they may be more likely to achieve high levels of success in their careers. However, only children can also be more introverted and less social than children with siblings.

Here are some additional statistics about the effect of birth order on career:

• Firstborns are more likely to be in leadership positions 👨‍💼. (Time)

• Middleborns are more likely to be entrepreneurs 💼. (Brookings)

• Youngest children are more likely to be creative and innovative 💡. (UH)

• Only children are more likely to have high IQs and to earn higher salaries. (Psychology Today)

So, what does all this mean for you?

It means that your birth order can have some influence on your career, but it’s not the only factor that matters ⚖️. Focus on your own unique strengths and abilities, and don’t let your birth order hold you back from achieving your career goals 🎯.

Here are some tips for overcoming the challenges of your birth order:

• If you’re a firstborn, learn to delegate and let go of control 🤝.

• If you’re a middlechild, don’t be afraid to speak up and assert yourself 🗣️.

• If you’re a youngest child, don’t be afraid to take risks and step outside of your comfort zone 👣.

• If you’re an only child, don’t be afraid to reach out for help and support 🤝.

Remember, you are not defined by your birth order. You are an individual with unique strengths and abilities 💪. Use your birth order to your advantage, and don’t let it hold you back from achieving your career goals 🎯.
