Being Ready for Different Kinds of Interviews

How to do well in an interview? It depends what kind of interview we’re talking about.

A behavioral interview focuses on your behavior — both in the interview and in the hypothetical workplace. Questions revolve around your conflict-resolution skills and try to tease out insight into the way you think and act on the job.

A competency interview assess your core skills, both hard and soft. For the latter, think in terms of things like communication skills, leadership skills, and team skills.

Stress interviews aim to test your demeanor under pressure, and find out how you handle challenges. The questions can be very direct or very arbitrary. Your goal is to stay cool calm and collected.

Of course, you’re not likely to be told what kind of interview you’re heading into in advance. Working with a recruiter can give you insight into what your interview may be like, and also what to expect in terms of the entire hiring process.

As a recruiter for 28+ years I’ve heard plenty of wild and crazy stories of interviews gone awry. It’s my job to prepare you as well as possible. If you need some help in interview prep, just give me a shout.
