“Work hard, play hard” is the old cowboy ethos that pervades a lot of companies to this day. But when you use that phrase while trying to recruit talent, it doesn’t always land the way you want it to. A lot of candidates, in fact, will take it to mean that you don’t encourage work-life balance. Many of us take the phrase as a signal for “sweatshop”.

Same goes for other common sayings like “fast-paced environment” and “It’s like family here.”

In a time when quiet quitting has become a trend, people are looking for roles where they can perform their best AND take care of themselves. If they read between the lines of your job posting that they won’t be able to do so, they lose interest fast.

Curious how your job descriptions sound to today’s talent? As a recruiter for 25+ years, I have the perspective to help you out. Don’t hesitate to give me a shout if you need a perspective or help in the hiring process.
