Are sabbaticals just for academia these days?

With all the talk about quiet quitting and burnout, it’s tempting to assume the workforce — especially the younger workforce — has just about had it.

According to federal data, more than 50M people in the US quit their jobs last year.

All of the disruption, pivoting and downright pandemonium of the pandemic and its fallout have made people tired, that’s for sure. But there’s a different way of looking at this entire situation.

In the Washington Post, Heather Long writes that “an important trend has taken hold: Americans are finally embracing career breaks.”

Sabbaticals, once considered the domain of education, are now gaining traction as a legitimate part of a career path across roles and industries. As a recruiter for 25+ years, I for one am interested to witness the normalization of #sabbaticals. Let’s see where this leads in the long run.

People that get a chance to take breaks, reflect and pursue personal passions have the opportunity to gain a healthy perspective, in my opinion.
