More Thoughts on Flexible Work

“Flexible work” is really important.

Or so we keep hearing. But what does that mean? And who is it important to, exactly?

The data can certainly confusing. One report says 60% of women and 52% of men would quit their jobs if employers do not allow some work flexibility/hybrid work arrangement.

On the other hand, in a 2021 study, 67% of supervisors consider remote workers more replaceable and 72% want everyone in the office, full stop.

Is this just a division between worker bees and managers? A tic in the development of the work arrangement concept?

In my role as recruiter I regularly talk to both candidates and hiring managers, so I consistently get both perspectives. It comes up in literally every conversation. My takeaway is this: data is nice, but every company is unique. While the trend is definitely toward more remote flexibility as a whole, that’s not true for every company, nor for every job seeker.

Which is why one thing has not changed in the world of hiring: It’s all about finding the right fit.
