What are the long-term effects of social media? No one really knows. And a new documentary finds parents are surprisingly OK with that.
The film, TikTok Boom on PBS, looks at the rise of TikTok and its social-political, cultural, and economic influences. And especially how the app impacts teens’ mental health.
If you think about it, it’s been less than two decades since we’ve had these platforms, so it makes sense that research is lacking.
But with ⅔ of teens saying they have the popular app and 16% saying they use it “almost constantly”—it’s high time we start that research.
Director Shalini Kantayya focuses on how the app gathers data from users, who are, in many cases, minors. That, paired with an outdated Online Child Protection Act (passed in 1998), makes it possible, she says, “[that] the algorithm might know your child better than you know your child.”
That’s a wake-up call.
As a recruiter for 25+ years, I’ve seen how important and affecting technology can be in ALL aspects of our careers & lives. Heck – when I first started in this business, technology was a desk phone and later a (gulp) Palm Pilot!
How are you balancing your use of these apps? How about balancing your family/children’s use?
