If there’s one thing you can say about scammers, they’re resourceful.
Just when you come up with one way to thwart them, they get even more inventive with their scams. And so it is that #recruitingscams are getting more and more sophisticated by the day.
The #betterbusinessbureau believes that 14M people in the US are targeted annually by employment scams (2020 data), who typically impersonate recruiters or employers to convince job-seekers to hand over money or personal data. Further, the 18-24 year old demo are considered most at risk of becoming a victim and women account for 67% of the victims.
One way #HR organizations can combat this type of fraud is to make their hiring processes explicitly transparent, so that candidates can easily find out whether they’re on a valid track to getting a job or in the midst of a scam.
The companies I work with, for instance, are motivated to help prevent fraud because it can unwittingly make their companies look bad, but also because they could potentially have to “clean up the mess” fraudsters make when candidates later try to follow up with the actual company.
Either way, if you see or experience an opportunity scam you can report or research it at BBB.org/scamtracker.
Be safe out there!
