Retail Automation Surging Too Fast for Customers?

There are two types of people: full-service diehards and self-checkout enthusiasts.

But if you’ve been to the grocery store lately, you’ve maybe noticed more self-checkout than ever. You’ve got the labor shortage to thank (or complain about, as most shoppers seem to be of the full-service mindset).

Self-checkout use has doubled since the pandemic’s start and made up 30% of all grocery transactions last year. And with each machine costing $14k-$40k, it’s not a cheap buy. Though for every 5-10 machines, only 1-2 workers is required.

With 2/3’s of shoppers reporting issues using the machines, it can definitely be a frustrating experience. We expect tech to make things easier, not harder.

But that’s often the case with any new approach or technology, isn’t it? Is the issue the machine or the user?

As a recruiter for 25+ years, I can honestly say it seems there are very few new strategies or technological advancements that come without an adaptation period.

And seriously… are you team checker or self-checkout? How about your career approach? Are you a DIY’er or have you realized the benefits of working with an experienced recruiter?
