“What new worker shortage?”
This is the question you might get from a typical small business owner when asked how they’re coping with the sudden lack of candidates for open jobs. For a lot of these companies, it’s ALWAYS been hard to hire.
So what can bigger businesses learn from small businesses who’ve had to be scrappy in the fact of hiring shortages?
Some measures instituted by low to mid market companies include condensing the hiring process, making compelling offers (when necessary thinking outside the “pay band) and effective cross training.
In one recent Wall Street Journal article on the subject, business owners talked about finding progressive ways to speed-train new folks to get them up to speed. Some of them are even starting their own “training academies.”
L&D efforts are critical in organizations of all sizes. If your company already has a pretty solid training organization in place, it might be a matter of getting the word out to potential new employees. The onboarding process would be a good time to start this.
That’s where a recruiter like myself comes in. We can help you spread the word to find the right candidates and make your hiring process more efficient.
