Writing an Effective Thank You Note

A dazzling interview is a step in the process. It does not necessarily close the deal. If you are really interested in the next step or want the job, don’t forget a follow-up note!

This thank-you note should be gracious, upbeat, and enthusiastic. That goes without saying.

A couple of other things to aim for:

💡 Make it personal by referencing real conversations you had during the interview. Specifically convey your interest in the position based on real situations.

💡 Make it speedy! It’s not unreasonable to rush to your computer to draft the note the minute you step out of the interview — or as soon as you can. Just make sure that context, grammar and punctuation are correct.

💡 Send a thank you to each interviewer in the process.

The thank-you note is a low-stakes way to affirm that you want the job and have the right communication skills to succeed in it.

I’m asked all the time so I will reiterate: YES – in 2022 (the day of email), thank you’ s are entirely appropriate. Further, there is a good chance the note could set you apart from other candidates.

Even if you are working with a recruiter like myself, don’t ever skip this step.

And if you are working with a recruiter, we can often give you tips on how to craft your note.
