Worker Shortage of 2023 and Beyond

The Great Resignation/Great Renegotiation/Great Reshuffle/Great Rethink all may be here to stay 😱

According to recent BLS & US Chamber numbers, the United States is facing a major worker shortage 🚨. There are currently 5.3 million job openings 🤯 for 6.1 million unemployed workers 💥. This is having a major impact on businesses across the country 💥.

According to the US Chamber of Commerce, here are some of the industries that are most affected:

❗Healthcare: The healthcare industry is facing a critical shortage of 1.2 million nurses, doctors, and other medical professionals 🏥.

❗Logistics: The logistics industry is struggling to find enough 800,000 truck drivers, warehouse workers, and other transportation workers 🚚.

❗Restaurants: The restaurant industry is having trouble finding enough 700,000 cooks, servers, and other food service workers 🍽️.

❗Retail: The retail industry is also facing a shortage of workers, especially in the grocery and warehouse sectors 🛒. There are 600,000 unfilled retail jobs.

❗Construction: The construction industry is struggling to find enough 500,000 carpenters, electricians, and other skilled trades workers 👷‍♂️.

The worker shortage is being felt in all 50 states, but some states are hit harder than others:

📌Nevada: Nevada has the highest worker shortage in the country, with 6.7 job openings for every unemployed worker.

📌Wyoming: Wyoming is also facing a severe worker shortage, with 6.5 job openings for every unemployed worker.

📌South Carolina: South Carolina has a worker shortage of 6.2 job openings for every unemployed worker.

📌Texas: Texas has a worker shortage of 6 job openings for every unemployed worker.

📌Arizona: Arizona has a worker shortage of 5.9 job openings for every unemployed worker.

There are a number of factors contributing to the worker shortage:

📃The COVID-19 pandemic has led many people to leave the workforce, either voluntarily or involuntarily. 😷

📃Retirement and the aging population are making it harder to find qualified workers. 👴👵

📃Significant inflation and increased cost of living  is making it difficult for people to afford to work. 💸

📃The lack of affordable childcare is making it difficult for parents to work. 👶

What can be done to address the worker shortage?

💡Businesses will need to raise wages and offer better benefits to attract and retain workers. 💰

💡Streamline the hiring process. This could involve reducing the number of steps in the application process, making it easier to apply for jobs online, and providing more feedback to applicants. 📚

💡We somehow need to make it easier for people to afford childcare. 🏩

The worker shortage is a complex problem, but there are things we can do to address it. By working together, we can create a more robust and equitable workforce for everyone. 🤝
