Resume vs CV. Interchangeable? Same thing? Not exactly…
When you’re applying for a job, you need to decide which document to use: a 📄 resume or a 📄 CV. But what’s the difference between the two?
A resume is a one- to two-page document that summarizes your work experience, education, and skills. It’s typically used for job applications in the private sector. 👍
A CV (curriculum vitae) is a more comprehensive document that can be two or more pages long. It includes your educational background, work experience, publications, awards, and other achievements. CVs are typically used for job applications in academia and research. 👍
Here are some of the key differences between a resume and a CV:
💡 Length: 📄 Resumes are typically one to two pages long, while 📄 CVs can be two or more pages long.
💡 Content: 📄 Resumes focus on your work experience and skills, while 📄 CVs also include your educational background, publications, awards, and other achievements.
💡 Purpose: 📄 Resumes are used for job applications in the private sector, while 📄 CVs are typically used for job applications in academia and research.
Here are some examples of when to use a resume and when to use a CV:
✏️ Resume: Use a 📄 resume when applying for a job in the private sector, such as a Sr Tax Manager or CFO position. 👍
✏️ CV: Use a 📄 CV when applying for a job in the medical or legal fields, or academia/research, such as a PhD position. 👍
✏️ Both: Use both a 📄 resume and a 📄 CV when applying for a job that requires both academic and professional experience, such as a research scientist or accounting professor position. ❓
No matter which document you choose, make sure it is tailored to the specific job you are applying for. Highlight the skills and experience that are most relevant to the position, and use keywords that are found in the job description.
Job requirements will be able to tell you which document they prefer and give you hints on how to tailor your document to their needs. If the job is looking for a history of published materials, speaking engagements or other informative or instructional presentations, most likely go with the CV.
