Exploring the Executive Level Job Search

So let’s start that job search.

You’ve got an already busy executive schedule without a lot of extra time in your day. Where to begin and what to expect?

🕵️‍♂️ Job searching can be tough, especially for senior level executives. Based on what I hear and read, here are 4 of the hardest parts, along with some solutions:

• Lack of transparency or disclosure: 🔎 Jobs are often not advertised publicly, so it can be difficult to find open positions. Oftentimes professionals are hired for positions that are not even technically “open” thanks to recruiters (such as me) or a robust network.

• High competition: 🔥 There are often many qualified candidates for senior-level jobs, so the competition can be fierce.

• Lack of opportunities: ❌ Due to technical or industry expertise, there may be fewer opportunities for senior-level executives. Also – by definition, there are fewer jobs “at the top”.

• Lack of time: ⌛ Senior level executives may not have a lot of time to dedicate to their job search, especially if they are still employed.

Solutions:

• Network with your contacts. 🤝 Let your network know that you are looking for a new opportunity. They may be able to connect you with someone who is hiring.

• Work with a recruiter. 🔎 A recruiter can help you find open positions and prepare for interviews. Find a tenured professional with a strong reputation for confidentiality and network built on years of practice.

• Tailor your resume and cover letter to each job you apply for. 📝 Highlight your skills and experience that are relevant to the specific position.

• Be prepared to negotiate your salary. 💰 Don’t be afraid to ask for what you’re worth based on what you bring to the table today.

• Don’t give up! The job search process can be long and challenging, but it’s important to stay positive and keep trying. Timing can make all the difference. Being in the right place at the right time – and prepared – can change your career.

Remember, you’re not alone! There are many senior level executives who are job searching. They are not always prominent due to the confidential nature of their search. Like anything – don’t give up, keep at it, and if you need help, drop me a note. 👍
