It’s always good to revisit topics that come up in my business with candidates on a (pretty much) weekly basis.
Here is a common one:
“What am I supposed to say when the interviewer asks me if I have any questions for THEM? How big picture or detailed should I get?”
Such is the plight of every professional entering an interview setting. You want to ask questions that seem intelligent and thoughtful, not too generic—and definitely not self-serving.
Most importantly, ask questions that are relevant to the expectations that will be placed on you. Outside of the obvious, here are a few I love:
“What would be my first priority when I arrive?”
“After the first 90-180 days how will I be able to define success in this role?”
“What’s the team like, who would I be working with most closely? Who are some of the stakeholders outside my department who will be relying on my work?”
Questions like this demonstrate a real interest and an eagerness to be prepared for the role, balanced by a sensible inquiry about whether it’s the right fit. You don’t have to come up with some esoteric questions to make yourself “sound smart”. A hiring manager hearing the above types of questions knows they’re dealing with a serious candidate.
