Are you taking your resume seriously?

Considering the average resume receives only a 7-second scan by hiring managers, if you’re making blatant or even subtle mistakes on yours, you’re somewhat doomed.

I’m not just talking about spelling and grammatical mistakes. I’m talking about the main reasons perfectly solid resumes get rejected on an initial scan:

• Your basic “relevant experience” stats on where you’ve worked, titles you’ve held, etc., don’t align with the job in question

• Your job longevity is suspect throughout your career, making you appear, at first glance, like someone who lacks resilience

• The writing is weak or just so dry it’s unreadable

• The format looks like it was made with a typewriter or pulled from an online application somewhere (these drive me absolutely bananas)

Yes, resumes need to look & read professionally, and there’s only so much you can say on a short page. But if the experience of reading yours is torture for the hiring manager, you lose. Real quickly.

Some of these things may be difficult to fix on a resume. If you’ve bounced around a lot in jobs, you can’t really hide that. But working with a recruiter like myself can make the difference in getting a hiring manager to consider you in the first place.
