Are you a fan of acronyms?
Somewhere in Washington DC there has to be a branding agency tasked with coming up with acronyms for all these bills.
In recent years, there have been:
CHOMP Act: Consumers Have Options for Molar Protection;
STALKERS Act: Simplifying The Ambiguous Law, Keeping Everyone Reliably Safe;
PROSTATE Act: Prostate Research, Outreach, Screening, Testing, Access and Treatment Effectiveness;
And everyone’s favorite government power overreach bill:
USA PATRIOT Act: Uniting and Strengthening America by Providing Appropriate Tools Required to Intercept and Obstruct Terrorism.
Here’s a new one that involves the workplace: the SHOW UP Act, which stands for Stopping Home Office Work’s Unproductive Problems. If this bill is passed, every government agency in DC would be expected to return to the office — or at least its pre-pandemic protocol.
Like everything in Washington, it’s a hotly contested move, but one that paints a pretty accurate picture of our times.
In my daily conversations with job seekers as a recruiter, I constantly hear from people who want the flexibility to work remotely and are basing their job decisions partly on this factor.
The SHOW UP Act is limited to government agencies in DC. However, if these employees are legally forced to SHOW UP, I wonder what the repercussions will be on other industries.
