Proper Recipe for Conducting Layoffs

“How do best we fire employees?” Sounds harsh.

An unfortunate question to have to ask, but here we are. Many companies have found themselves in the position of having to conduct layoffs recently. According to layoffs(dot)fyi, as of 1/31, 241 tech companies have laid off 77,916 employees in January 2023 alone. That’s just in the tech sector!

Some do it by giving advanced warning. Others rip the band-aid.

Some conduct grand, sweeping layoffs all at once. Others lay off in a tiered fashion.

Some insist on laying off face-to-face. Others make do via Zoom.

As Katy George of McKinsey told the Wall Street Journal last month: “I’m not sure there’s one recipe” when it comes to layoff best practice. That being said, an overarching principal in conducting layoffs is to be compassionate, offering empathy & help to outgoing employees and transparency and support to those who remain.

As a recruiter for nearly years, I’ve seen cycles of (over)hiring and layoffs come and go. This, too, shall pass. And for plenty of companies, it’s not even a thing right now.

If all this has you considering your options in 2023 and you’re in the market for a new job — or to hire! — get in touch. If there is a move to be made, I can help you make it on your terms.
