Where Have All the Workers Gone?

Even while companies are downsizing and recession looms, a lot of folks are still mulling over a career change — or dropping out of the workforce altogether.

The Brooking Institution reports that 4 million people are now missing from the workforce, but where have they gone? The theoretical cost of those lost wages is around $170 billion a year (potentially as high as $230 billion).

The Washington Post interviewed a handful of people who left their jobs last year, and while it’s certainly not a statistically accurate view, these interviews offer some interesting insight.

Brian Atkinson, who was a special ed teacher, is now a lifestyle podcaster. Amy Forkner retired from nursing at the early age of 56. Allyse Arucan, once a healthcare coach, is now a software engineer.

People are finding new, creative ways to support themselves — or they’re figuring out how to live on less. So maybe not all of those wages are lost. As a result though, hiring has certainly become harder in a lot of industries.
